My Personal Statement and Goals:
Being a senior and only 18 hours away from graduation I have pondered the question of "what do I want to be when I grow up" a lot lately. Of course in the near future, by near future I mean the remainder of this year, I will finish up my degree here at UTEP. I am majoring in criminal justice with a minor in psychology and depending on what the fall schedule offers I will probably be graduating in
December of this year. It will have taken me ten years to receive my bachelors degree, so I guess I was not lying when I told my mom I was on the ten year plan.
I am torn between two careers and each have their pros and their cons. I first being teaching, and the second a parole officer for the State of Texas. Right now I am checking on what I need to get into the alternative certification for the El Paso Independent School District and what areas I would be qualified to teach. I feel teaching would be my first choice because the schedule would help me to complete a masters degree. I plan on mastering in psychology so I figure if I do go into education and enjoy it, I would like to go into educational psychology and become a school counselor.
On the other hand, I have already volunteered at the parole office and found it to be very interesting and exciting. The downfall is the hours are longer and some evening home visits are required, which may cause an obstacle in continuing with my education.
So as for my long term goals, they really depend on what I decide to do in the near future. First and foremost, is continuing my education. I do know which path I decide to choose that I plan to make a difference and hopefully affect someone else’s life the way so many people throughout my long journey have affected mine.
